Global trends in African Swine Fever are the focus of debate at SIAVS 2024

A swine disease that reshaped global protein trade in the late 2010s, ASF will be discussed in a debate on perspectives and trends

African Swine Fever (ASF), a disease that impacted global swine production in the late 2010s and reshaped global trade in this and other animal proteins, will be the subject of a debate during the International Animal Protein Show (SIAVS), the largest event in the sector in Brazil, scheduled to take place from August 6 to 8 at the Anhembi District in São Paulo.

Moderated by Lia Treptow Coswig, representative of the Animal Health Department of Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture, the panel is scheduled for the second day of SIAVS and will address the impacts and perspectives related to the disease, as well as response strategies developed by governments and the animal health industry.

Providing a global overview of the disease, which still affects production in Europe and Asia, researcher Christian Gortazar from the University of Castilla-La Mancha in Spain will discuss the global situation of ASF, including its overall impacts on animal production.

Bringing a forward looking perspective on disease control, veterinarian and PhD in epidemiology from the University of São Paulo, Maurício Dutra, will lead a discussion on trends and perspectives regarding the use of vaccines to combat ASF worldwide.

“This is a technical topic, but one that directly influences the market and the broader trends of the global protein chain. This became clear in 2018 in Asia and in the years that followed across Africa, Europe and even parts of the Caribbean. Although Brazil has remained free of the disease for four decades, it is essential to advance this debate and maintain global alignment with a focus on prevention, as we have been doing through intercountry groups such as PPA América, which brings together associations from across the American continent, and other initiatives,” emphasizes Sula Alves, Technical Director at ABPA.
