The main poultry and pork industry event in Brazil, #SIAVS2022, held from August 9 to 11 in São Paulo, also stood out as one of the most relevant initiatives for sustainability in the production chain during the year.
By hosting several actions aimed at promoting a sustainable industry profile, SIAVS contracted the neutralization of 158 tons of CO₂ related to emissions generated by activities carried out during the event.
The carbon neutralization covered several areas, including food preparation, event setup and dismantling, transportation by third party vehicles, travel, indirect emissions, and treatment of waste generated by the event, among others.
This initiative adds to the clean energy contracted by SIAVS to power the three days of the event, through the acquisition of I-REC (International Renewable Energy Certificates). I-REC is a global system for tracking environmental attributes of energy that issues certificates proving the renewable origin of the energy used. The certificates were issued by Trix Energia. In practical terms, the traceability certificate confirms that the energy demanded by SIAVS was injected into the electrical system from renewable sources. Each certificate represents 1 MWh, which in Brazil corresponds to 60 kilograms of CO₂ not emitted.
The neutralization of greenhouse gas emissions was carried out by the company Neutralize Carbono, following the guidelines established by the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT) for this type of initiative. The project directly benefited by the neutralization was the Teles Pires Hydroelectric Power Plant, which generates energy under a clean model with reduced use of fossil fuels.
“Innovative and trendsetting for the sector, SIAVS reinforces its purpose and invests in the decarbonization of event activities, establishing a benchmark for trade shows and congresses in our industry. Sector sustainability was a constant topic throughout the event and is now reflected in the neutralization of all these actions,” said ABPA president Ricardo Santin.
2022 edition highlights - #SIAVS2022 was the leading event for the sector during the year. A total of 2,300 conference attendees and 80 speakers participated in technical and market focused discussions. Highlights included the CEOs panel, featuring leaders from agribusiness companies debating the future of the production chain. Other panels addressed future projections for animal protein, competitiveness, crisis management, logistics, and technical issues such as antimicrobials, salmonellosis, and others.
Around 21,000 visitors from 53 countries attended the event, the highest number recorded so far. Through the Producer Project, 1,900 integrated poultry and pork producers from various production regions participated.
With an area 30 percent larger, SIAVS featured around 200 exhibitors of equipment, biological and pharmaceutical inputs, feed, and other suppliers from different areas of the production chain, showcasing their technologies and products across more than 20,000 square meters.
These figures result exclusively from the participation of 48 agribusiness companies producing and exporting poultry, pork, eggs, dairy products, duck, farmed fish, and genetic material. According to the companies consulted, the deals concluded and contacts established during the event are expected to generate USD 880.3 million in exports over the next 12 months. During the three days of the event alone, the business conducted reached USD 544.3 million.
The next edition of SIAVS will take place from August 6 to 8, 2024, in São Paulo. More information is available at www.siavs.com.br .
