Student from Eldorado do Sul, RS, wins ABPA Applied Research Merit Award

The award ceremony took place on Thursday at the International Animal Protein Exhibition, SIAVS, in São Paulo.

São Paulo, August 8, 2024 - A new index for determining antimicrobial multidrug resistance in poultry was the winning topic of the ABPA Applied Research Merit Award, a traditional scientific competition promoted by the Brazilian Animal Protein Association. The result was announced on the final day of the International Animal Protein Exhibition, SIAVS 2024, in São Paulo, Brazil.

The author of the winning study and recipient of a trip to SIAL Paris in October or Gulfood Dubai in February of next year is student Vinícius Sasso Nickel, from the Graduate Program in Animal Health at the Desidério Finamor Veterinary Research Institute, in Eldorado do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul. His work is titled “Proposition of a novel index for determination of antimicrobial multidrug resistance”.

“We congratulate all participants for the extremely high quality of the studies, which brought innovation and practical application as key differentiators. I would also like to highlight the resilience of this student from Rio Grande do Sul who, despite having his university affected by flooding, still met all the required criteria and earned first place,” said ABPA President Ricardo Santin during the award ceremony, held at the Distrito Anhembi auditorium during SIAVS 2024.

Second place was awarded to the study “Polymeric nanocapsules loaded with toltrazuril as an approach for the therapeutic control of coccidiosis in poultry”, authored by researcher Ana Paula Almeida Bastos from Embrapa Swine and Poultry, based in Concórdia, Santa Catarina. Third place went to the study “Evaluation of a new next generation sequencing protocol for identification of Eimeria spp. in domestic chickens”, authored by Guilherme Zaratin Dumalakas from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at São Paulo State University, located in Araçatuba, São Paulo.

This year alone, the ABPA Applied Research Merit Award received more than 50 submissions from students and researchers from across Brazil, presenting studies with practical applicability in the areas of production, management and housing conditions, nutrition, technology, processes, public health, animal health and sustainability.
