ABPA announces record pork exports during the opening of SIAVS

The International Animal Protein Exhibition takes place from August 6 to 8 in São Paulo.

The International Animal Protein Exhibition, SIAVS, began this Tuesday, August 6, in São Paulo, Brazil. With the participation of more than 100 Brazilian brands from companies and cooperatives producing and exporting poultry, pork, beef, eggs and fish, delegations from around 50 countries and an extensive program of symposiums and panels, the event is considered one of the largest industry gatherings in the world.

The opening ceremony was attended by ministers, three state governors, members of parliament and representatives of Brazil’s production chain. In his opening remarks, Ricardo Santin, president of the Brazilian Animal Protein Association, ABPA, the event organizer, announced a record of more than 120,000 tons of Brazilian pork exported in the month of July alone.

Santin also highlighted the importance of the pork and poultry sectors to the national economy. Together, these segments account for an annual gross production value exceeding BRL 350 billion and generate more than 10 million direct and indirect jobs. Over the past 30 years, the chain has also generated BRL 1.5 trillion in export tax revenue.

“We generate wealth, jobs and income, and drive the development of regions that today are benchmarks because of the strength of this production chain,” said the president of ABPA. With an optimistic speech reinforcing the resilience and strength of Brazilian agribusiness, Santin also outlined the main challenges and opportunities for Brazil to further expand its global presence through agribusiness.

End of the animal health emergency

Earlier on Tuesday, just hours before the opening of SIAVS, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock officially declared the end of the animal health emergency in the state of Rio Grande do Sul related to Newcastle disease, identified in the municipality of Anta Gorda on July 17.

Present at the event, Minister Carlos Fávaro highlighted the organization of the sector and the partnership between the Brazilian government and entities such as ABPA in the swift resolution of the case. “It has been just over 20 days since we identified the situation, and it has already been resolved,” he said. “This demonstrates the importance of organization and the structure we have in the animal protein chain,” he added, also emphasizing transparency throughout the process.

Commitment to biosecurity was also highlighted by the president of ABPA. However, according to Santin, it is necessary to move forward on other fronts. At the end of the event, the association presented a document to the minister and other authorities outlining the sector’s priorities to help Brazil expand not only its international competitiveness, but also productivity and efficiency in on farm production.

In the 2024 edition, for the first time, SIAVS integrates all links of the animal protein chain, including representatives from the beef, fish and dairy sectors, through partnerships with the Brazilian Association of Meat Exporting Industries, ABIEC, and the Brazilian Fish Farming Association, Peixe BR.

Strong presence of authorities

In addition to Minister Carlos Fávaro, the opening ceremony was attended by the Minister of Agrarian Development and Family Farming, Paulo Teixeira, the governors of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, Santa Catarina, Jorginho Mello, and Paraná, Ratinho Junior, Senator and former minister Tereza Cristina, the president of the Parliamentary Front for Agriculture, Federal Deputy Pedro Lupion, the Secretary of Agriculture of São Paulo, Guilherme Piai, the Secretary of Agrarian Development of Pernambuco, Cícero Moraes, among others.

The opening keynote address was delivered by economist Eduardo Giannetti, who analyzed the current global scenario and the challenges that create opportunities for Brazilian agribusiness and the animal protein sector.
