SIAVS Promotes Technical and Market Debate on Animal Welfare

Technical discussions related to the development of global standards for animal welfare and the market driven impacts of this trend will be addressed at the International Poultry and Swine Exhibition SIAVS, the largest event in the sectors in Brazil, scheduled to take place from August 9 to 11 at Anhembi Parque in São Paulo.

During the program on the second day of lectures, a debate moderated by Marília Rangel from MSD Animal Health is planned. The discussion will address different views and perspectives regarding trends and challenges for advancing the animal welfare agenda.

One of the presentations will be delivered by Javier Prida, representative of the Argentine Poultry Producers Chamber CAPIA based in Buenos Aires and coordinator of the Latin American Egg Institute ILH. In his presentation, Prida will discuss the development of international protocols that regulate animal welfare within the scope of the World Organisation for Animal Health Woah, formerly OIE.

From another perspective, the president of CloverLeaf Animal Welfare Systems, Jason McAlister from Missouri in the United States, will present the private sector viewpoint regarding standards and progress on animal welfare. In his presentation, the animal welfare specialist will address international requirements on the topic, expected timelines worldwide, how the market has responded to these advances, and the growing role of private standards related to poultry, swine and egg production.

“Consumer trends and expectations have elevated animal welfare to a priority topic in debates and in the development of solutions that incorporate the One Health approach within a context of production viability. By building technical and market based perspectives, this debate aims to highlight insights that bring a more holistic view to the sector, in line with what the world expects from Brazil as a food producer and with the care for human, animal and environmental health,” analyzes Ricardo Santin, president of ABPA.
