SIAVS offsets carbon emissions, uses clean energy and promotes waste awareness at the trade show

Being a meeting point for sustainable value chains such as animal protein requires alignment with the sector’s core principles. With this objective, the organization of the International Animal Protein Show, SIAVS 2024, taking place from August 6 to 8 at the Anhembi District in São Paulo, has prepared a series of initiatives focused on environmental preservation and emissions reduction.

One of these initiatives is ensuring that all energy used during the event comes from clean sources.

To achieve this, the Brazilian Animal Protein Association, ABPA, organizer of SIAVS, has contracted I-REC, International Renewable Energy Certificates. I-REC is a global system for tracking energy environmental attributes that issues certificates proving the renewable origin of the energy used.

The certificates will be issued by Trix Energia, an exhibitor at this edition of SIAVS. In practical terms, the traceability certificate confirms that the energy demanded by SIAVS was injected into the power grid from renewable sources.

Each certificate represents 1 MWh, which in Brazil corresponds to 60 kilograms of CO₂ not emitted. The initial projection is that nearly 1.5 metric tons of CO₂ that would have been emitted due to the event’s energy demand will be neutralized through this system.

Emissions - Along the same lines, ABPA will also contract the neutralization of emissions generated by activities carried out during SIAVS.

The neutralization will cover several areas, including food preparation, event assembly and dismantling, transportation by third party vehicles, travel, indirect emissions and the treatment of waste generated by the event, among others.

At the previous edition, 158 metric tons of CO₂ related to emissions from activities carried out during the event were neutralized.

The neutralization of greenhouse gas emissions was carried out by the company Neutralize Carbono, following the guidelines established by standards of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards, ABNT.

Awareness - Other initiatives will be part of SIAVS sustainability actions. Selective waste collection and responsible disposal of waste generated during the event will be implemented. In parallel, an internal campaign will encourage exhibitors to adopt sustainable materials and practices in their booths, such as the use of recyclable and reusable materials.

“SIAVS plays the role of hosting meetings and representing major production chains that have a global presence and are guided by sustainable principles. These principles guided previous editions of the event and will be expanded in 2024,” highlights Ricardo Santin, President of ABPA.
