About RAM
What is Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)?
AMR can be defined as the ability of a microorganism to multiply or persist in the presence of an antimicrobial agent at concentrations that would normally inhibit or kill it (FAO/WHO).
Why is AMR a global concern?
According to the Codex Alimentarius (FAO/WHO), Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) constitutes one of the main global public health risks, as it compromises or makes the treatment of bacterial infections unfeasible due to the spread of multidrug-resistant microorganisms. The increase in bacterial strains resistant to available drugs, coupled with the scarcity of new classes of antimicrobials under development, indicates that the future management of infections, in both humans and animals, may become increasingly challenging, even in cases considered simple.
The animal protein production sector plays a key role in ensuring the rational and responsible use of antimicrobials, in order to minimize their possible contribution to the development of antimicrobial resistance and their potential to transmit food-borne infections to humans through meat products and/or other animal derivatives (ALLIANCE).
