Event included tributes to FACTA President Ariel Mendes and to Inaldo Sales Patrício
The Foundation for the Support of Poultry Science and Technology (FACTA) promoted a debate on the global scenario and research related to Avian Influenza during a symposium held as part of the International Animal Protein Exhibition (SIAVS), earlier this month in São Paulo.
The panel, divided into two sessions, addressed the role of migratory birds and marine mammals in the eco epidemiology of the disease, the main routes in South America, as well as the origins and containment of cases in the region. The discussions featured specialists Jansen de Araújo from USP, Priscilla Prudente do Amaral from ICMBio and Mário Sérgio Assayag from Aviagen.
In another session, Daniela de Queiroz Baptista, Head of the Surveillance Plans Management Division at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, and researcher Sjaak de Wit from Utrecht University in the Netherlands, presented different experiences in addressing the disease. Topics ranged from lessons learned by Brazil regarding cases in wild and backyard birds to the current debate surrounding the development of vaccines for Avian Influenza. The discussion also included a presentation by Fabio Vanucci, Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota in the United States, who addressed the current situation of Influenza A (H5N1) in the US dairy herd.
